WHAT IS CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS?

This is a condensed meaning of the term “apologetics.” The word “apologetics” originates from the Greek word apologia, which originally used of a speech of defense or an answer given in reply. In ancient Athens, it referred to a defense made in the courtroom as part of the normal judicial procedure.

Apologetics is the both the science and art of answering questions by using reasons and evidence. Our faith is rational and intelligent as we seek to defend and give an account for our faith. Although the word appears about 17 times in noun or verb form in the New Testament, and both the noun (apologia) and verb form (apologeomai) can be translated “defense” or “vindication” in every case,2 but in the New Testament, the word “apologetics” appears for the first time in 1 Peter 3:15 which is the key verse for Christian Faith. “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…”

Ninety nine per cent of Christians cannot defend their biblical position. This is largely due to church leaders. There should be no excuse for a Christian to be unable to defend his or her faith. Mere Bible study once a week cannot cut it. Many have been a Christian for 30 to 50 years never attend a bible study class. Many use 1 John 2:27 to deceive people but ignore 2 Timothy 2:15 altogether.

Every Bible believer should be able to give a reasonable presentation of his or her faith in Christ. We are not talking every Bible believer needs to become an expert apologist or a theologian. Every Bible believer, though, should know what he believes, why he believes it, how to share it with others, and how to defend it against lies and attacks. We accept too many doctrines on the surface, never questioned where they came from, and never checked if the teacher teaching us is qualified to teach or does it need to be taught him according to the scripture.
